OpenMind Archive

MIND Inc. was a non-profit corporation dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with psychiatric disabilities. From November 1989 through September 1993, MIND used the state of California to devlop a prototype for statewide electronic networking which it called “OpenMind.” Representatives from all major constituency groups in mental health used and contributed to the devlopement OpenMind.

OpenMind was a place where service and treatment providers, policy makers, mental health consumers, ex-patients, survivors, housing, education, legal and vocational specialists, administrators, researchers, and advocates could exchange ideas and information. It was a place where everyone who had a stake in the mental health system could discuss program, legislative, fiscal, and philosophical issues and discover their common ground. OpenMind also provided instant access to an on-line library of mental health related information.

By 1993, through the process of developing OpenMind it became clear that though networking technology was still very promising it was not yet universally available, affordable or understandable enough to the participants we needed to grow OpenMind. Several factors convinced us to let the concept hibernate until the networking environment matured, as it inevitably would and has.

We are pleased to re-introduce the databases of OpenMind via the World Wide Web. We hope that some of the information presented here can be useful to you. Though, clearly, some of the informationis no longer timely, we chose to present the databases as they were originally developed in the event that there may be use in seeing the structure itself, as it evolved.

We dream that some of the ideas presented here might stimulate new possibilities for the growth of networking to alleviate suffering and promote healing and joy.
